I have 20 years of active duty service in the Navy, where I retired as a Lieutenant Commander. My journey began in 1992 as an enlisted Sailor, starting off as a deck seaman. Throughout my time in the Navy, I held various roles including journalist, warship driver, and public affairs officer.
One significant aspect of my career was working extensively with young adults. Unlike typical corporate or civilian jobs, the lives of the Sailors under my leadership fell within my area of responsibility, both on and off duty. As a division officer, I faced numerous personnel issues such as bullying, workplace conflicts, personal hygiene concerns, financial difficulties, theft, vandalism, unexpected pregnancies, self-harm, sexual harassment, and sexual assault, among others. Additionally, during my early days as a young Sailor, I personally experienced and had to navigate the challenges of living and working alongside peers who lacked basic work ethic and etiquette, struggled with money management, roommate dynamics, and the overall transition to independent living.
In 2018, I became the communications specialist with the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences at Cal State San Marcos. This position also involved collaborating with the College's student success program. It was during my tenure at CSUSM and my involvement in student success that I recognized the crucial need for life skills education for teenagers and emerging adults. This realization led me to establish Adulting Highway.
To support my professional background, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Arts degree in Communication from San Diego State University.
